Epiretinal macular membrane
Retina is a very thin layer of tissue on the back of the eyeball and sends information to the brain. At the centre of it there is the macular which is a special part of retina and used for recognizing complex shapes. Epiretinal macular membrane is the disease that a thin sheet of fibrous tissue is formed on the surface macular.
What causes the epiretinal macular membrane?
This disease mostly happens because of vitreous (the jelly inside of the eye) detachment from the retina, and this commonly happens among the people whose age of 40-60.
Also, it’s sometimes caused by after eye surgery or inflammation inside of the eye.
Symptoms
How to examine
Firstly, the vision check and the examination using amsler chart would be done and then we observe the retina precisely by Optical Coherence Tomography.
To check the back of the eye, we use eyedrop dilating your pupils. After applying the eye drop your eyesight would be blurred and you may have too much brightness for 5-6 hours. (The effect can differ depends on individuals)
Treatment to an epiretinal macular membrane
Eyedrops or glasses are not effective for the disease. If the symptoms are serious, it will be treated by the operation (removing the vitreous from the inside).
